What?!
R visited yesterday. She's in the country for the month, visiting from Buenos Aires. I hadn't seen her since February, and I'd missed her. She wanted to go shopping for makeup for the first time in her life. Something very light and subtle, just to outline her features so she didn't feel so washed out on the dance floor. We spent the afternoon in SoHo, visiting MAC and Uniqlo. It was a lot of fun, especially since it was a new experience for her.
Walking down Broadway at one point, I paused to wait for her to refasten her shoe. There was a crowd of men around one of the street vendors. At least, that's what I gathered from the corner of my eye. As R caught up with me and we passed them, one of the men leaned over and repeatedly called out in my direction,
"India! India!"
I was confused. Was it someone I knew? RD used to call me "India" as a child. But no, this seemed different. I barely stopped myself from looking. I didn't want to give whoever it was the satisfaction of gaining my attention. I have to say that was a first... and very surprising to me in NY.
